WereDog Costume
This project is a great quick and inexpensive costume. All materials used amounted to about $5.00. If you add up everything it was about $10.00. I'll use the rest of the shirt and coat for other projects. Not bad for a home-made costume!
It's easy to make. You just cut along the edges of the sewn parts, so you don't have to hem anything but the neckline. The project shown is almost done. It isn't perfect, BUT . . . I think it turned out great for a last minute dog costume! If you have more time, take your time and work on the details. You can really make this costume cuter!
I bought the shirt from the Salvation Army. It was a child's Medium. The purple shirt is a Child's Large. Make sure the collar of the shirt fits a little loosely on your dog. You can always sew the shirt smaller. You can't make the collar bigger! I got so excited about starting this project that I forgot to take a "before" photo of the green shirt, so I used the purple one.
I bought an old coat from the Salvation Army as well. I ended up using some of the fake fur on it for this project. You can buy fake fur at a local craft store or material store for a decent price. I'll post photos later of how they folded the fur so it showed up on both sides of the project.
I bought the harness for a dollar at the 99 Cents Store. The one shown in the slideshow was too small. The one sewn to the shirt was the right size. I sized the harness to the dog and sewed the middle part in place so it would not move around. Then I sewed the costume directly to the harness. I like this idea of a harness costume because it's loose, so it's comfortable and won't bee too hot . Pumpkin HATES clothes. She barely tolerates collars and harness. If she has too much of a problem with the shirt at the party, I can take it off and she can just wear the collar.
You can always make a button hole in the costume for the leash ring on the harness. You will have to make one on each layer of the shirt going side to side rather than up and down, depending on your leash ring.
The shirt may seem too long in the photos, but I had several reasons why I didn't shorten it:
One - I was in a hurry to get this made for a Dog Halloween Party. I until the last minute, as usual. LOL!
Two - It gives it the illusion that it's werewolf fur all the way down the dog's body.
You can sew the shirt shorter as well as add fake fur across the bottom of it if you prefer. I didn't have the time on this one. Maybe on the next one!
I trimmed all the little threads off all the edges after I was done so it looked much nicer.
Photos of Pumpkin in her costume at the party to follow!
You can always make this project into a nice dog coat with matching collar. It's a cute idea! I think I will do that with the purple shirt and post photos later.
If your dog likes clothes and doesn't get hot easily you can add more fur around the neck and dog chest area.
Also, feel free to tatter or cut/rip strips of the bottom of the shirt to make it more shredded looking, like in the movies. If you want to be more scary you can add "blood" with beet juice, cherry juice, etc.
Get creative! Have fun!
*** I took a few photos of Pumpkin (the dog) at the party and added them to the slide show, but could not get a really good one of her. I'll take some more soon. She got too hot, so I had to take the costume off. The detached collar worked pretty good. We got one comment that she could be a lumberjack. LOL! Could be! Pumpkin does not like wearing any type of "clothes." She'll wear a coat out if it is cold. She has a werewolf coat now that is pretty warm!
The "Ghost" dog is Emma Zen. That is her mommy loving her while Pumpkin is sniffing her feet. Emma Zen represents an awesome organization where they collect donations to provide firehouses with oxygen, first aide and safety equipment to saves animals lives that have been in a fire. http://www.emmazen.com
